Can These Plans Beat Standard Service Hikes?

We’re only weeks away from January 1 when the standard service rates for both of CT’s main electric companies are set to rise. That’s why smart energy shoppers are looking to beat the rate hikes with the best electric rates in CT. Winter bills are already high enough and you deserve some new year’s savings. So don’t get left behind! Instead, take a look at the cheap plans that could beat these new standard service rate hikes.
Compare Jan. 1 Rate Hikes
It’s been recently announced that CT standard service rates would rise on Jan. 1, 2026. Eversource rates are hiking up from 9.748 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 12.64 cents per kWh (a 29% increase). Meanwhile, United Illuminating rates will rise from 11.6841 cents per kWh to 13.695 cents per kWh (an almost 17% increase).
The average CT home uses almost 700 kWh per month. So Eversource supply charges are jumping from about $68 a month to about $88.50 per month. UI supply charges are coming up from almost $82 to almost $96 a month. When you add in the utilities’ distribution charges, these drive your bill up even further. Currently, a UI ratepayer using 700 kWh per pays about $91.95 in distribution charges. And an Eversource customer with the same usage would pay an higher delivery charge; about $135.00.
On top of this, NOAA forecasts suggest you use more electricity for heating this winter. So, all told, a basic service electric bill could cost you more than $200 a month.
CT Energy Plans That Beat Standard Service
The plans below probably won’t always beat the new standard service rates in your area. But, their money-saving secret lies in their rewards programs. If you shop or dine often, then you can create big value by taking advantage of these third party energy company rates.
For instance, the Constellation 12 Month Home Power Plan charges 13.9 cents per kWh for some Eversource customers and 13.5 cents for certain UI customers. This equals an average monthly supply charge between $94 and $97 a month. But, Constellation also sends monthly energy usage emails to help you track your energy saving goals. Customers can find value by taking advantage of discounts from their rewards program. That’s something neither utility offers.
On the other hand, the Major Energy Secure Choice 12 plan brings power to your home for 13 cents per kWh. This equals an average monthly supply charge of $91 ($5 less than UI winter rate).
Eversource customers wanting longer-term service, might also want to check out the Direct Energy Live Brighter 24 plan. This plan charges 14 cents per kWh, which averages to a $98 monthly supply charge.
Frequent travelers though, may want to check out the Xoom Energy SureLock 12 – Airline Rewards. This plan charges 13.9 cents per kWh for UI customers and 14.1 cents per kWh for Eversource customers. But, along with shopping and dining discounts from their rewards program, customers also earn airline points for American Airlines flights.
